venice windows, matter-of-factly

  1. The windows have so much character. Who lives there? Probably a doll maker. Or a famous architect. Or a young Ennio Morricone, composing music for the neo Spaghetti Westerns (you are familiar with the nouveau Westerns, aren't you?)

    1. one can't stop asking these questions when in Venice, i agree, i was obsessed with this myself (and i wanted to be a story teller and be able to write novels about each and every life hidden behind these windows :-)

    2. You've read Winterson, The Passion? The shifting canals. Probably one of her best. Geist I am f#<%>} off with all these damn google / apple issues, which constantly seek to impede me posting on anything even vaguely google-connected, which now is a pretty long list. I do not wish to sign in to blogger!

  2. what stories must have been seen through these windows over the years!!

i am drawn to the second picture, the one with the laundry drying on a wire (a child's clothes?), for its narrative of the fleeting and personal that unfolds against the backdrop of history ...

but ultimately, i like the third photo, the spray of flowers in the corner and the expanse of bare wall. of course, this is also a narrative of the fleeting moment measuring itself against history ... but it is more, too -- it is the erasure of history into the moment ...

    1. James, as always you _see_ right into the heart of the images...
it is very hard to resist the fascination of these windows, though of course every photo of them is the same, and there are millions of them everywhere. there is a photographer who has photographed every Venice window, one can buy his postcards in every shop in Venice :-)

  4. Rilke:

    Comme un verre de Venise
    sait en naissant ce gris
    et la clarté indécise
    dont il sera épris,

    ainsi tes tendres mains
    avaient révé d’avance
    d’être la lente balance
    de nos moments trop pleins.

  5. hi beautiful Roxana, this is a charming photograph. the rose coloured stone reminds me of the rose coloured stone of assisi which gives it a fairy tale like quality where a woman may come to the window to let down her hair as happened in rapunzel, well that is the kind of thing that happens in these warmer climates.
yes that is so sweet to see the laundry out to dry and yes as you have pointed out matter of factly this must happen the day to day laundry even when it comes to nistorically reknown sites the laundry must dry out.
and I recalled reading in georgina mason's guide to rome when I was in rome how the romans seemed to be indifferent to the historical significance of the building as they dried out their clothes. and perhaps ofcourse the historical significance lies only in our mind the striving to grasp time and hang onto it even if it means looking back while our lives rush on.

    golden autumn kisses.

    1. yes, i wondered all the time how it might be to _live_ there, to lead an ordinary life in this city, is that possible at all? i wouldn't like to be flooded by tourists every day and have myriads of snapshots of my clothes taken everyday, but who knows how they perceive this? :-)

      bises, september-golden.

  6. I agree with James's that two and three are particularly striking. There are many similar shots to be had Bellagio and Mennagio. Perhaps something to do with the geography?

    1. they have these wooden blinds everywhere, but still they are different from town to town, i think, the colours too. then of course the differences are subtle, and they all exude the same unmistakeable italian atmosphere :-)

  7. si dintr-o data atat de dor de vacanta, de toate ferestrele care stau deschise spre lume, de forfota din exterior si de calmul pe care mi-l imaginez, mereu, in interiorul spatiilor inchise.
